| without a doubt one of my favorite restaurants in Beijing. not only is it delicious, but the meal portions can be huge without breaking the bank. i've eaten a large amount here for around rmb30 - the more people, the better the value. i always go for the basics - lamb, needle mushroom, bai cai (cabbage), potato. this is pretty no frills. no gimmicky soup base here. this type of hotpot features broth based soup and its not thick (like Guizhou hotpot) nor is it spicy (like sichuan) though they can add hot spices if you wish. the other great feature here is that they have individual pots instead of one huge pot in the middle. maybe its less fun that way for some people but many of my Western friends consider traditional huo guo with the shared pot to be unsanitary - dipping one's chopsticks in and out of the communal bowl. no worries here with individual hot pots. the locals fill this place up from 5pm which is always a good sign for Chinese food. there are at least 5 locations in Beijing, but this is the one i frequent the most. i am getting very hungry just writing this review. enjoy! |
