| This is without a doubt Beijing's best Xinjiang Restaurant. Forget the gimmicky dancing at Grape, or Afunti. That is for tourists. When you see a tourist bus outside the restuarnt, run for your life. At this Xinjiang Muslim Restaurant in Beijing, 4 hungry people can eat like kings here for around RMB130 in total. I'm not talking about skimpy lamb skewers (yang rou chua'r). The chua'r here range from RMB5 for yang rou to RMB10 for more exotic offerings like sheep kidneys or the Chinese version of Rocky Mountain Oysters (ie. sheep testicles). I recommend the yang rou chua'r. I dont care much for organs, but the kidney was as tasty as any I've had. The balls, well, they were actually very tasty though hard to chew. However, the best offering at this restaurant is the yang rou tui (roasted leg of lamb). Beware it takes an hour to cook, but it arrives well cooked but at the same time succulent and just lightly spiced so the flavors of the lamb shine through. I also recommend a dish which combines yang rou (lamb) with their nan which is deep fried with spices. It is absolutely delicious. Also, for veges, I'd suggest ku gua (bitter melon), and some nicely done fried green peppers. This is a small restaurant with only around 8 tables of 6. Despite its hard to find location inside a hutong, during primetime, it gets packed. But the crowds disperse around 8PM and by 9PM you will be the only ones eating. The owner Ainiwar is friendly as are all the waitresses who are all from Xinjiang. And there are hookahs (water pipes) for some good, friendly unwinding with fruit tobacco. As in many hutong restaurants, the bathroom facilities are the local outhouses. So make a pit stop at home before coming here. |
